Floral Mechanics for a Stunning Floor Garland: A Behind-the-Scenes Look
In the world of floral design, creating breathtaking, gravity-defying arrangements requires more than just a keen eye for aesthetics; it’s all about strong, reliable mechanics. Recently, I had the pleasure of designing a gorgeous floor floral arrangement that seamlessly cascaded down from a tall plinth, creating a jaw-dropping centerpiece. Here’s a peek into the process and how we ensured the structure was safe and sturdy enough to hold the weight of the florals.
Building the Base To start, I chose a heavy pot filled with florals to anchor the design on top of a rectangular plinth. This provided a stable foundation and ensured the arrangement would stay in place. But with such a large and dramatic display, we needed more than just a strong base – it was all about securing the mechanics.
Connecting the Structure The next step was building a custom timber “T” structure, which I had premade to support the weight of the flowers and greenery. The base of the "T" was placed securely on the ground, while the top connected to the pot with chicken wire, creating a sturdy bridge between the two.
The chicken wire was essential for holding everything together without disrupting the flow of the design. It allowed us to safely drape and build the floral elements down the plinth and across the floor, giving it that perfect cascading effect.
A Safe, Sturdy Arrangement This combination of the heavy pot, rectangular plinth, and timber T-structure – along with strategic use of chicken wire – ensured the entire arrangement was secure, safe, and durable. And most importantly, it allowed us to get creative with a design that wowed everyone without the risk of collapse.
