As leaders in the faux flower industry, we’ve encountered the challenges of designing large-scale installations on a budget. It's an art to balance aesthetics and cost, especially when striving for that breathtaking, organic look that clients love. Today, I want to share with you a framework that has helped me and countless others navigate this balancing act.

Understanding the Three Tiers of Faux Flowers

When you're planning a large installation, one of the most important things to consider is how to allocate your budget across different types of flowers. This is where the concept of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd order flowers comes in.

First Order: Focal Flowers (30%)

These are the stars of your arrangement. Focal flowers are bold, striking, and immediately draw the eye. They create the overall theme and mood of your design. For these flowers, I recommend allocating 30% of your budget.

Examples:
- Peonies
- Ecuadorian and Garden Roses
- Dahlia
- Anemone
- Amaryllis
- Ranunculus
- Orchids

These flowers are often more expensive, but they set the tone and act as the foundation for your design.

Second Order: Bulk Flowers (60%)

Filler flowers are the backbone of your arrangement, filling out the space and adding volume. They work in harmony with your focal flowers, complementing and supporting them without stealing the spotlight. For these flowers, 60% of your budget should be allocated.

Examples:
- Hydrangea
- Spray and Classic Roses
- Stock
- Tulips
- Lisianthus
- Carnations
- Baby’s Breath

These are your go-to flowers for building volume and providing a lush, full look.

Third Order: Intricate Flowers (10%)

Intricate flowers are the finishing touches that add texture, depth, and uniqueness to your arrangement. They’re the small details that can transform your design from beautiful to extraordinary. Allocate 10% of your budget to these elements.

Examples:
- Billy Buttons
- Amaranthus
- Bunny Tails
- Ruscus
- Chamomile
- Cosmos
- Berries
- Peppercorn

These flowers add character and a touch of whimsy, ensuring your arrangement has personality and interest.

The Role of Greenery in Faux Flower Arrangements

Greenery plays a crucial role in tying your arrangement together. It adds movement and creates a natural, flowing look. I always recommend using at least two types of greenery: one wispy and one solid. This combination will add layers and dimension, making your arrangement more dynamic and visually appealing.
